With the completion of the new track facility at the University of Guelph’s Alumni Stadium and the generous support of New Balance, the 2013 Speed River Inferno track meet promises to the best edition yet.  The meet has had great highlights in its first three years; including the first sub four mile in Wellington County, a Canadian Record in the 2000 metres and a Canadian Junior Record in the 2000 metres.   The limiting factor had always been the facility; with this situation now resolved the 2013 Inferno is ready to light up the new track.

Athlete confirmations continue to roll in with four Olympians already confirmed, along with athletes from Great Britain, Kenya, Rwanda, the United States.  Highlighting the competitors will be local Olympians Hilary Stellingwerff, Taylor Milne and Alex Genest. Stellingwerff will step down in distance from her customary 1500 metres to run the women’s 800 metres.   The race could involve a Canadian Junior Record attempt as Canadian Junior 1000 metre record holder Emma Galbraith will be in the field.  Milne and Genest will battle in the 3000 metre steeplechase, Genest has already achieved the “A” qualifying standard for this summer’s World Championships in Moscow. Milne, in his first year in the event, will be chasing that mark along with club mate Chris Winter.  Another highlight event to watch will be the men’s 1500 metres with seven athletes already confirmed who have broken 3 minutes and 42 seconds, the equivalent of a sub four minute mile.

Like previous editions of the Inferno the event will follow a similar structure to smaller European meets with a pre program starting at 5:40 pm and the main program starting at 6:45 pm.  The final event of the night will be the men’s 3000 metre steeplechase starting at 7:50 pm.  Tickets for the event are $10 and can be purchased athttp://www.guelphvictors.ca/display.php?page=inftic.  Athletes interested in participating should email Elite Athlete Coordinator Chris Moulton at [email protected]
